- THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER

- It was a hot day, a decent englishman would have described it as "a bloody hot
- day", even the animals kept a low profile and just slept away the day. But for
- the jolly good lads at the 146th company of the Imperial Light Infantry had no
- other choice than to march all the day no matter how hot it was. They had to
- reach the bridge before the japs did it. If the japs would reach the bridge
- before them they would not get passed the river and get stucked behind enemy
- lines.
- -"Come on you lads, its only 'round 10 bloody miles left", Percy Needham the
- young Lieutenant shouted. The company had lost lot of men in when they together
- with 5 other companies had tried to stop the japs at a crossroad three days ago.
- The Major had died and the only officers left was Lieutenant Needham and
- Sergeant Borrows. Infact there was only 63 men left of the whole company. They
- didn't have much equipment left and only food for this day left. It was a hell
- of a situation but getting caught by the japs would only make it worse. The
- lads marched on for some hours but suddenly they stopped when one of the scouts
- returned. Telling by his face he was not bringing in good news.
- -"Sorry Sir, but I must report that the japs have reached the bridge.", the
- young man Joseph Laundes said, "They are some japs standing at the bridge" -"
- -"Well, how far away is the bridge then ?", asked the Lieutenant.
- -"'round 1000 yards further on, Sir, they seem to just have arrived from the
- north and havent spotted us yet.", replied Launders.
- -"How many japs where there?", the lieutenant asked.
- -"Oh Sir, I really don't know, It was 'round 100 japs, Sir." was the Scouts
- reply.
- -"Well Lads, I think we have only one thing that a decent englishman can do.
- Lads, load your guns, we are attacking within one minut!"
- The company didnt have much ammunition left but it would perhaps be enough if
- they shot good to this battle but not more. They put on the helmet and
- unsecured their weapons. The battletired soldiers of the 146th walked in to the
- jungle for a 100 yards to the north and then they spreaded out, each a meter
- from the other on a long line and started a fast walk against the bridge. Five
- seconds before they reached the open place before the bridge they opened fire
- against the japs. The sudden attack spread death amongst the japanese soldiers.
- Many of them fell the first second and when the brittish reached the open place
- there were only 15 japs left standing. The brits run forward shooting and
- screaming. Some of the brits ran out of ammunition but they brung forward their
- big knives and continued the run forward. Within a minute had the now 56
- brittish soldiers reached the bridge. Eight of them were carrying four wounded
- men but they had to leave three dead unburied behind because they heard vehicles
- coming from the north.
- The Brittish walked on the bridge and then they saw. Fifty meeters ahead when
- the bridge ended there were a new japanese military camp and soldiers running
- out to the bridge. And behind them had 10 trucks with japanese soldiers
- arrived.
- -"Well lads, lets go on forward, we have no other choice.", the Lieutenant said,
- "Corpral Dawson, please play God save the King"
- The corpral started playing and all the men in the 146th started singing and
- marched on forward. Sixtythree jolly good lads died on the Bridge on the River.
